I had the urge a couple weeks ago to google, "are condoms compostable," as one does. I went down a rabbit hole and found some amazing companies changing the sex toy and the sexual health industries. Climate change is being discussed more and more in the mainstream media but you don't often hear about eco-friendly sex and sexual wellness. Our favorite eco-influencers aren't talking about this huge industry that has traditionally used plastics that can't even be recycled, produced lubes with scary chemicals, and that has a total disregard for its overall environmental impact.

So, I decided to compile a list of the most eco-friendly condoms, lubes, sex toys, and kink toys. Think of this as the intersection of environmental and pleasure activism, and self love. I visited an eco-village when I was 19 and they taught us that, "Earth Love is Self Love," what is good for the planet is good for us. Everything I share here is not only better for the environment but better for your sexual health and wellness. This Earth Month lets help manage that eco-anxiety with some eco-friendly sex and masturbation ;)

Condoms

Before we go any further, yes, 100% natural-vegan condoms (all I share here are) are compostable! Caveat! Most commercial facilities do not accept them because they are considered as a Class 2 Medical Device, but if you are comfortable composting them in your backyard you can.

Sustain Natural Condoms:
  • Sustain is at the top of the list for the most sustainable condom. They are made of 100% natural latex, are Fair Trade, FSC, Fair Rubber, and Vegan Certified. Sustain is a Woman-Owned company, is a certified B-Corp, and donates 1% of all sales to women's healthcare organizations in the U.S.

  • Available in 3,10, 24, & 144 packs- it is more sustainable to buy in bulk!

  • They are made of 100% natural, vegan latex. Lola is Woman-Owned and Partners with Period Equity and I Support the Girls.

  • Available in packs of 12.

  • They are made of 100% natural, non-GMO, vegan latex. Glyde is Woman-Owned and a Certified B-Corp. Their certifications include; The Vegan Society, PETA's Caring Consumer Program, Ethiquette, the Green Business Network, and Fair Trade.

  • Available in 12, 36, and 100 packs.

  • They are made of 100% natural, vegan latex. Lovability is Woman-Owned and is a member of 1% For the Planet and Women's Voice for the Earth.

  • Available in 3, 12, and 30 packs.

Lube

If you're not using a condom...

I know a lot of people are apprehensive about using coconut oil as lube but it is totally safe! Just make sure its virgin coconut oil and to use it sparingly, you don't need much! Virgin Coconut Oil is probably the most sustainable "lube" and especially if you can get in bulk! My suggestion for which brand of coconut oil is definitely Dr. Bronner's! Dr. Bronner's Coconut Oil is regenerative organic, Fair Trade, non-GMO, and vegan certified.

Reminder: Oil breaks down latex, if you are using a condom you need a water-based lube!

And if you are:

Sustain is an amazing brand doing everything right! Their lube is 96% organic, unscented, water- based, and enriched with aloe. They are also Woman-Owned and a Certified B-Corporation.

Dame's Aloe Lube is an organic, aloe-based lube made from natural plant extracts and formulated

to match the vaginas pH. Dame is Women-Owned and on a mission to close the Pleasure Gap.

Sex Toys

ohhcean is the first sex toy range in the world made with ocean-bound plastic. Their vibrators are made with upcycled ocean-bound plastic and renewable energy. They are waterproof and fully rechargeable (rechargeable is much more eco-friendly than battery powered).

The Womanizer Premium Eco is made from biolene, a bio-based, biodegradable material. It is splash proof and fully rechargeable. Womanizer also established the Pleasure Fund, a commitment to invest 250,000 Euros into research on female sexual health, sexual well-being, and sexual pleasure.

The Gaia Eco was the first ever biodegradable vibrator. It is made from a starch-based bioplastic.

Kink

From what I found, there really isn't much out there for sustainable kink toys but I found a couple and I still wanted to include them here!

Twisted Monk Bondage Rope is made from organically-grown hemp right here in the U.S. They also recycle waste product into building materials and art!

The Natural Love Company makes a play rope and a blindfold. They are a member of 1% For the Planet, powered by renewable energy, and are carbon negative. They also plant two trees with every customer and their packaging is single-use plastic free.

I hope you enjoyed this post and that you use it as a reference over and over again! Its even a good gift guide to keep in your back pocket. Remember to stay safe and have fun!
